    About Peggy Yabu Mawson

Peggy is Garrwa, Gudanji and Wambaya and was born on Brunette Downs Station on the Barkly Tablelands. She grew up speaking Gudanji and Wambaya. Her country is Garrinjini through her father and grandfather. It is owned by the Mararabarna (mermaid-like Ancestral Beings). She is ngimarringki (boss) for that country. Peggy spent much of her childhood on Spring Creek Station. Peggy started working at the art centre about 5 years ago. She first started making bush medicine, dumbuyumbu, out of the local sandlewood plant, and later started painting. She loves painting the rocky hills that characterise Gudanji country, as well as other distinguishing features of the landscape, such as lagoons, turtles, birds and white gums. “I like coming to the art centre because it keeps me busy and I get to spend time with the other women”.
