Ruby Tjangawa Williamson (1940-2014)

Ruby Williamson is a Pitjantjatjara artist who was born in 1940 near Amata, close to the Musgrave Ranges, South Australia. She and her family settled at Musgrave Park station in the mid-1950s. Williamson began painting with Minymaku Arts (now Tjala Arts) in 2000. Her subjects include Puli Murpa (mountain range), Ultukunpa (honey grevillea), bush cats, bush food, lizards and Tinka (sand goanna). She also weaves baskets from tjanpi (grass) and fashions punu (wood carvings). Williamson is an accomplished printmaker and was the winner of the 2002 Tandanya/Arts South Australia Aboriginal Artists’ Fellowship Award.
