Gloria Tamerre Petyarre (c1942-2021)

Gloria Tamerre Petyarre was born around 1942 at Mosquito Bore, Utopia in the Northern Territory. Since her first solo exhibition in 1991, she has been regarded as a leading artist in the Utopia community. Her works have been widely exhibited in Australia, across Europe, North America and Asia. Like Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Gloria first came to prominence as a batik painter in the late 1970s, before painting on canvas in the late 1980s. The use of sophisticated batik-making techniques combined with the early body-mark references of women's ceremonies, appear to have shaped the unique forms of Utopia's painting style in the 1980s. Gloria, one of four sisters renowned for their painting practice, is considered to have taken various forms based on ceremonial markings and her traditional stories into an abstracted style more consistently than many of her contemporaries.

In her paintings throughout the 1990s, where she progressed in size and precision, Gloria created some of the most significant recent artworks. A multi-award winning artist and highly collectible by the time she passed away in Alice Springs in 2021.
