Patrick Freddy Puruntatameri

Patrick Freddy Puruntatameri developed his skills as a carver under the tutelage of his father Paddy Freddy Puruntatameri (ca. 1925-2002) who also taught him how to source the pigments and ironwood for his sculptures. Puruntatameri (Jnr) joined Jilamara Arts and Craft soon after its establishment, where his carvings of his totem, the jurrukukuni / owl, have resulted in his widespread reputation. He manages the Murrunungumirri Carvers’ Shed at Jilamara Arts and Crafts, which is named after his father, where he mentors younger artists learning traditional Tiwi carving and jilamara / design.
