Rammey Ramsey (1935-2021)

Warmun Art
Born at Old Greenvale Station (Bow River Station), East Kimberly, Western Australia. Lived and worked Bow River Station. Gija people.
Rammey Ramsey painted for ceremony throughout his entire adult life, however, he only began painting professionally in 2000. His practice incorporated a combination of striking monochromatic works and use of bold colour to depict his country and ancestral lands.

Solo exhibitions of Ramsey’s work include New Work by Rammey Ramsey, Seva Frangos Gallery, Subiaco (2011); Rammey Ramsey: Small Boards, Raft Artspace, Darwin (2009); Rammey Ramsey – In the Pink, Raft Artspace, Darwin (2008); Rammey Ramsey: Deeper than paint on canvas, William Mora Galleries, Melbourne (2004); Rammey Ramsey, Raft Artspace, Darwin (2003); and Rammey Ramsey, Raft Artspace, Darwin (2001).

Ramsey’s work also appeared in a number of group exhibitions, including LIVELY: New Prints from Warmun Arts, Nomad Arts, Darwin (2015); Warmun: Gija Contemporary Art of Western Australia, Harvey Art Projects, Idaho (2014); Gija Manambarram Jimerawoon (Gija Senior Law People Forever), Australian Embassy, Paris (2013); Northern Impressions – a celebration of contemporary printmaking, produced with Northern Editions, Darwin, touring nationally (2011–2013); Gaagembi – Poor Things, William Mora Galleries, Melbourne (2010); Four Men, Four Paintings, RAFT Artspace, Darwin (2006); Jirrawun in the House: A Contemporary Experience from the East Kimberley, Parliament House, Canberra (2005); Beyond the Frontier, Sherman Galleries, Sydney (2005); and Gaagembi – Poor Things, William Mora Galleries, Melbourne (2000).

Ramsey’s work is held in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney and the Ian Potter Gallery, Melbourne. Bio Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney.
